Alberta is home to many stunning national parks. Calgarians are only a short drive away from many beautiful camping areas. It’s no wonder that so many enjoy camping whenever the opportunity arises! Good quality camping gear can be very expensive and it’s important to take good care of your equipment so that it lasts a long time. Here are our top tips for storing your camping gear.

Group Your Camping Gear for Easy Storage

It’s important to keep your equipment organized so that it’s easy to find what you want – when you want it. This will help you quickly grab the equipment that you need and will prevent you from forgetting an important item. You don’t want to realize that you forgot your sleeping bags when you arrive at the campsite!

We suggest grouping like items together. It’s a good idea to have separate bins and piles for items such as cooking supplies, bedding, sleeping bags, and equipment such as tables and chairs. This will save a lot of time when it’s time to grab your equipment and head out.

Use Storage Bins

Storage bins are an easy and effective way to store your equipment. They keep your gear protected and are also easy to stack. They’re easy to grab and quickly load into your vehicle. This maximizes your storage space. You may want to invest in clear storage bins as this will make it much easier to figure out what’s inside each individual bin.

Storage bins are great for protecting your equipment while you’re camping. They prevent animals and pests from getting at your supplies. This is very important as you don’t want animals to access your food. Storage bins will also keep out any moisture from morning dew or if it rains while you’re camping. We suggest labeling all the bins and creating a master list of the bins and what they contain. This will save you a lot of time when you’re trying to find the necessary gear.

Make Sure that Your Camping Gear is Dry

We can’t stress this enough. Make sure that all of your camping gear is dry before storing it. This will prevent mold and mildew from developing while in storage. Check your sleeping bags, tents, toys, etc. to ensure that they have been aired out and are dry before storing them. Bugs and dirt love to hide in your equipment. It’s important not to bring these things into your storage space. Storing clean items will help to extend the life of your equipment.

Don’t Forget About the Batteries

Batteries are extremely handy and it’s important to bring extra batteries with you when you go camping. You don’t want your flashlight to stop working in the middle of the night! However, you should always remove batteries from any electronic items such as flashlights and lamps before storing them. Batteries can leak or corrode and may damage your items while they are in storage.

Conduct an Annual Inventory

It’s amazing how much stuff a person can accumulate over the years! You may wind up with multiples of the same items or maybe storing something that’s broken with the intention of one day throwing it away. It’s a good idea to go through your equipment at the beginning or the end of the camping season. This will allow you to throw away items that you no longer need. You will free up valuable space by donating or recycling items that are no longer needed or functioning.
